Gas Mileage Calculator
Find out your vehicle's true fuel efficiency to better manage your budget.
The Driver's Handbook for Gas Mileage and Fuel Efficiency
A vehicle's fuel efficiency rating—often advertised as MPG or L/100km—is one of the most significant factors in its long-term cost of ownership. However, the official "sticker" rating is achieved under ideal laboratory conditions. Your **real-world gas mileage** can be quite different. This calculator is a practical tool that empowers you to calculate your car's actual fuel efficiency based on your own driving data, providing valuable insights into your expenses and your vehicle's health.
Why You Should Track Your Gas Mileage
Regularly calculating your gas mileage is one of the smartest habits a car owner can adopt. Here’s why:
- Budgeting and Savings: Knowing your true MPG or L/100km allows you to accurately forecast your fuel expenses. Once you have this number, you can use our Fuel Cost Calculator to get a highly precise budget for your daily commute or next road trip.
- Early Warning System for Vehicle Problems: A sudden, unexplained drop in fuel efficiency is often the first symptom of an underlying mechanical issue. It could indicate problems such as low tire pressure, a clogged air filter, failing spark plugs, or an issue with the oxygen sensor. Catching these problems early can save you from more expensive repairs down the road.
- Environmental Impact: Better fuel efficiency means you are burning less fuel to travel the same distance, which directly translates to a smaller carbon footprint.
How to Accurately Calculate Your Gas Mileage: The Fill-Up Method
This calculator is designed around the most reliable method for tracking fuel efficiency. It requires a couple of trips to the gas station.
- Step 1: Fill Your Tank Completely. Go to a gas station and fill your tank until the pump automatically clicks off. Do not top it off further. Immediately record your vehicle's current odometer reading. This is your "Previous Odometer Reading."
- Step 2: Drive Normally. Use your car as you normally would. Drive until the tank is at least half empty for a more accurate reading.
- Step 3: Refill the Tank Completely. Return to the gas station (preferably the same one and same pump for consistency) and fill the tank completely again, stopping when the pump clicks off. **This is the most critical step:** record the exact amount of fuel you just added. This is the "Fuel Added" value. Also, record the new odometer reading. This is your "Current Odometer Reading."
- Step 4: Calculate. Enter the three numbers you recorded into the calculator above to find your true gas mileage for that tank of fuel.
The Formulas Explained
The mathematics are straightforward but differ between measurement systems.
- MPG (Miles Per Gallon): `Mileage = (Current Odometer - Previous Odometer) / Gallons Added`
- L/100km (Liters per 100 Kilometers): `Mileage = (Liters Added / (Current Odometer - Previous Odometer)) × 100`

For Informational Use: This calculator provides a fuel efficiency calculation based on the data you provide. It is intended as a tool for personal tracking and budgeting.
Not a Diagnostic Tool: While a drop in mileage can indicate a problem, this tool is not a substitute for professional mechanical diagnosis. If you notice a significant and persistent drop in your vehicle's fuel efficiency, consult a qualified mechanic.
