Understanding the Army Body Composition Program (AR 600-9)

The U.S. Army places a high priority on physical fitness and readiness. The Army Body Composition Program (ABCP), outlined in Army Regulation 600-9, is the official method for ensuring Soldiers maintain an appropriate level of body fat. This program's primary objective is to ensure Soldiers are healthy, physically fit, and ready to deploy. This calculator is an unofficial tool designed to help individuals estimate their body fat percentage using the same formulas and standards as the U.S. Army.

The Science Behind the "Tape Test"

While the first step of the ABCP is a simple height and weight screening, Soldiers who exceed the screening weight for their height are then subject to the "tape test." This method uses circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. It is a cost-effective and practical method for a large organization.

The Official Army Formulas

  • For Males: % Body Fat = 86.010 × log₁₀(Abdomen - Neck) - 70.041 × log₁₀(Height) + 36.76
  • For Females: % Body Fat = 163.205 × log₁₀(Waist + Hip - Neck) - 97.684 × log₁₀(Height) - 78.387

(All measurements are in inches)

How to Take Measurements According to AR 600-9

Accuracy is paramount. The Army has very specific instructions for taking these measurements:

  1. General: All measurements should be taken three times and averaged. If any measurement differs by more than one inch from the others, take an additional set.
  2. Height: Measured in stocking feet on a flat surface, with the head held level.
  3. Neck: Measured just below the larynx (Adam's apple) and perpendicular to the long axis of the neck.
  4. Waist (Abdomen): For males, this is measured at the navel. For females, it's at the point of minimal abdominal circumference (usually halfway between the navel and the bottom of the sternum).
  5. Hip (Females only): Measured at the point of maximum protrusion of the buttocks (hips).

Army Body Fat Percentage Standards (AR 600-9)

A Soldier's body fat percentage must not exceed the maximum allowed for their age group and gender.

21–2722%32%

Why Body Composition Matters More Than Weight

The ABCP focuses on body fat rather than just weight from a scale. This is because weight alone, like the standard BMI, can be misleading. A very muscular Soldier might be "overweight" according to a simple height/weight chart but have a very low, healthy body fat percentage. The tape test, while not as precise as clinical methods, provides a better assessment of a Soldier's health and fitness in relation to their weight. For a non-military assessment, you can use our general Body Fat Calculator.
